The Usambara Mountains situated in the north-east part of Tanzania, are known for their pleasant climate, beautiful viewpoints and fertile slopes. Favoured by the Germans and English during colonial times, the area is rich in historical buildings from the period. Lushoto, the centre for the tours, is located halfway between Dar es Salaam and Arusha.

Several Days Tours:

·         Five Days Itinerary

Day one 4-6 Hrs.

Drive from Lushoto to the village of Magamba , then trek from Magamba through the rain forest, farm land, traditional villages, to Lukozi for overnight at the hostel. You have the chance to see animals like monkeys and reptiles like chameleon.

Day two: 4-6 hrs

Start walking from the campsite after breakfast via traditional villages, farm lands, and nice landscape to Rangwi convent for overnight at Rangwi Hostel.

Day three 4-6 hrs

Optional. Either; climb Mzoghoti peak early in the morning around five, or; help nuns at the convent with activities with like harvesting, cooking, washing dishes and watering the garden, or; take a short walk around the village.

Day four: 4-6 hrs

After breakfast walk from the convent through different villages, visit pottery women, nice views, arrive Mtae in the late afternoon. Overnight at the Guest House with view. Later walk around the village of Mtae , sit for sunset later.

Day five: 1.5-2 hrs

Catch transport early in the morning around 4:00 or 4:30 back to Lushoto. After breakfast walk to Irente view point starting around 10:00 a.m which will take about 4hrs.

·         Two Days Itinerary

Day one 4-6 Hrs.

Start walking from the camp site through village of Kwembago and then enter to the Magamba rain forest then afternoon take the transport to village of Rangwi for overnight at the Hostel of the Convent.

Day two: 4-6 hrs

After breakfast walk from Rangwi through the villages with nice views. Later walk around the village of Mtae , and sit for sunset. Overnight at the Guest house.

·         Mazumbai forest 2 to 5 days.

Walk from Soni and pass through Kwamongo and Magila. Continue to the Bumbuli Mission – a historic German settlement – and the Mazumbai rainforest, a bird watcher’s paradise. Return via the villages of Mgwashi and Kwesine.

This is a four to five day’s tour and is physically challenging.

·         One day tours around Lushoto         

§  Irente view point (4-6 Hrs)

Start walking from Lushoto through the villages of Maguzoni and Yoghoi to the famous Irente viewpoint about 1500 meters above the sea level where you have the view over the Maasai steps almost 1000 meters below. On the way back visit the Irente Farm where you can sit for picnic lunch before continue ring walking back to Lushoto.

§  Magamba Rainforest (5-6 Hrs)

This tour begins with an uphill walk from Lushoto to the royal village of Kwembago , where you learn about cultural history of the traditional ruling clan, the Kilindi. From Kwembago you proceed to the Magamba rainforest, home to black and white Columbus Monkeys. The return to Lushoto passes via an old German Middle School and the village Magamba.

§  Growing Rock (5-6 Hrs)

Take transport to Soni in half an hour and start walking from Soni via village of Shashui and Kwemula to the Kwamongo peak, famous for its seasonal multicolored butterflies. From the peak you have views of Soni, Lushoto and the Handeni plains. You descend to the village of Magila at the foot of the Growing rock and visit a soil conservation project and learn the rock is growing. Then back to Soni for taking transport back to Lushoto.

§  Mkuzu Waterfall (5-6Hrs)

Start walking from Lushoto through the villages, forest and walk uphill to the Migambo peak about 2,400 meter above sea level where you have a view over some villages around Lushoto and descend down to waterfalls and also sit there for picnic lunch and walk half way and taking Transport back to Lushoto.

§  Bangala River (5-6Hrs)

Driving from Lushoto to Soni in half an hour and start walking from Soni via village of Mbuzii and walking slowly down the steep slopes of the Bangala River valley, at times wading through cool mountains streams that offer a welcome relief to the rising savannah heat. Throughout the walk you see traditional irrigation systems and have beautiful views over the Maasai plains. Before returning to Lushoto you visit a local farm or tree nursery.

§  Usambara farm and flora (4-5Hrs)

This walk takes you through the fertile farmlands of Jaegertal to a fruit tree nursery where you learn about different varieties of fruit trees and their propagation. You can continue uphill to the village of Vuli to learn about local soil conservation, irrigation projects and farming methods. You return to Lushoto via the Arboretum.

§  Montessori Sisters of Ubiri (4-5Hrs)

This tour takes you for a short walk from Lushoto to the Catholic Mission of the Montessori sisters in Ubiri. On the way see the local life of the nearby town. Less visit the above usambara farm tour.

§  Sakharani Wine Tour of Soni (5-6Hrs)

This tour takes half an hour driving from Lushoto to Soni and start walking from Soni through Maweni farm where you experience the botanical garden at the farm and tea plantations to Sakharani. If chance available you can visit the made wine or only buying. On the way back you can stop for waterfall at Soni and the colorfully market. From Soni is taking transport back to Lushoto.

§  Sky Line plus God’s rock (5-6Hrs)

Visit a famous old built sky line have a wonderful view of Maasai steeps together with History review of people of the mountains Pare and Shambaa.

·         Cycling Tours

§  5 Days from Lushoto to Moshi.

Day 1

Lushoto to Mtae about 58.7km/ nature of the road: all dirt. Elevation gain 3230ft/985.

Day 2

Mtae to Gonja about 52.8km/ nature of the road, all dirt. Elevation gain1729ft/527m.

Day 3

Gonja to Same about 66.3km/ nature of the road, all dirt. Elevation gain 1572ft/480m.

Day 4

Same to Mwanga about 52km/nature of the road, all paved. Elevation gain 1085ft/331m.

Day 5

Mwanga to Moshi about 58.1km/nature of the road, all paved. Elevation gain 977ft.

§  One day Lushoto, Gare Mission to Lushoto 40km through the rainforest and village.

§  Three days Lushoto , Kwemakame, Mlola, Mlalo 100 km. The route takes you through the villages, rainforest and breathtaking landscape.

§  Three days Lushoto, Soni, Bumbuli, Mazumbai 105 km via tea estate, reserved forest and villages.

Two days Lushoto, Lukozi, Mtae, 100 km.
